Having someone tailgate you when you're driving can be aggravating, but it's important to keep your cool. A driver who is tailgating is probably already on edge and you don't want to set them off. Practicing defensive driving and staying alert can help you avoid tailgaters.

  • Notice someone driving very close to the back of your car? If so, get out of their way. Gradually slow down and switch lanes or turn to let the person go past you. Hopefully slowing down will get the tailgater to slow down as well.
  • If you're driving in an inner lane you should move to an outside lane. Usually traffic moves faster in the inside lanes. So if you aren't moving faster than most of the traffic stay out of the passing lane or "fast lane".
  • If you find yourself being constantly tailgated while driving you may want to go a different way. Changing routes could help you avoid tailgaters. Try taking the city streets where there's less traffic and cars are moving slower.
