The battery is arguably one of the most important parts in your car and you can't drive it anywhere if the battery is dead. It's essential to know how to test the battery, before it's too late.

You'll need a voltmeter, which measures the battery's state of charge. And always remember to wear protective gear like glasses and gloves. Make sure your car is completely off, with no lights on. Use the voltmeter to connect it to your battery by matching the positive voltmeter-lead (red) to the positive terminal on the battery. Then you should connect the negative lead (black) to the negative terminal on the battery. If the reading shows a 50%-charge or less, you should consider a new battery.
