The first thing you need to understand when performing a headlight restoration project is that you need to use caution while sanding the deteriorating outside layer of polycarbonate plastic. If you are too aggressive, then you will scratch the deep, unblemished layers of plastic—those clean layers you hope to expose to be as bright as new for better vision driving around San Leandro at night.

To assure you are not harming the lens surface and are still removing the damaged layers, grab the lowest level of sandpaper grit and wet it — sand horizontally across the headlight for ten minutes. With the remaining two grit levels of sandpaper, wet the second highest level and sand diagonally across the lens for ten minutes. Repeat the process with the highest level of grit but in the opposite diagonal.
